In combat sports there is nowhere to hide. It is one-on-one, the result is immediate and one mistake can decide the match. Many athletes feel sharp in the room and tight on the mat, in the cage or in the ring, with nerves that build for hours or days before they compete. Mental coaching and hypnosis train the skills that hold up under that pressure: staying composed, resetting after being taken down or hit, and committing to your game plan. Robert Barnett, C.Ht., PMP, MBA, is a certified hypnotherapist and mental performance coach with 35+ years of hypnosis experience. He works with wrestlers and MMA fighters, along with athletes in nearly every sport, including combat sports. Wrestlers, fighters and grapplers of every level are welcome, and younger athletes are too. He works with athletes and their parents by Zoom from anywhere.

When the mental side matters

Sound familiar?

Wrestlers and combat athletes who:

01 /

Pre-match nerves that build

Nerves start days before, the night before is restless or the warm-up feels flat, and the energy you need drains away before you compete.

02 /

Sharp in the room, tight in the match

Look sharp in practice and live drilling, then tense up, hold back or freeze when the match, the cage or the ring is real.

03 /

Hesitating to commit

Hold back on attacks for fear of being countered, taken down, hit or caught, and lose the aggression that makes you effective.

04 /

Losing composure after a setback

A point against you, a takedown or a hard shot sends you into a spiral instead of a reset.

05 /

Replaying the last loss

Carry a tough loss or a rival’s name into the next match and compete afraid of the same ending.

06 /

Pressure from brackets and recruiting

Feel the weight of seeding, tournaments, recruiting and the expectations of coaches, teammates and family.

The pattern behind it

Why you can be sharper in the room than in the match

In practice, the stakes are low, so you perform on trained habit. In a match, with an opponent across from you and a result on the line, the same move can feel like a threat, and an automatic stress response takes over: tight muscles, rushed decisions, a flat or frozen feeling. Conditioning, drilling and technique improve your game, but they do not change that response, because it runs below conscious thought. That gap is what mental coaching works on.

In Robert’s experience, many athletes focus on the outcome, such as the win, the bracket or who is watching, and performance tends to improve when attention shifts to the process: what you can control, one exchange at a time.

The mental game plan

The solution: a mental plan built around your sport

The work usually follows three steps, shaped around your sport, your weight class or division and your competition schedule:

HypnosisCBT techniquesNLP methodsVisualizationSubconscious pattern work
01

Map your pressure moments

We pin down when and where your performance changes: the days before, the walk-out, the first contact, being behind or the final period.

02

Rehearse a better response

Hypnosis and guided visualization work at the subconscious level, where automatic reactions live, so you can rehearse the focus and composure you want before you are in the moment.

03

Take a routine into competition

You leave with a pre-match routine, a focus cue and a short reset you can use after a setback, a lost point or a hard shot.

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, and it is one tool among several. Most pressure reactions, such as freezing, rushing or overthinking, are automatic habits that run below conscious thought, which is why willpower and positive thinking rarely fix them. We combine hypnosis with complementary methods: cognitive behavioral techniques (CBT) to identify and restructure the thoughts that feed doubt, NLP methods to change how you picture and respond to pressure situations, and subconscious pattern work to replace old reactions with new ones. In Robert’s experience, combining them gets results more quickly than any one alone. It is not mind control, and you stay in charge throughout.

Visualization is a core skill we teach, and we use it inside hypnosis. Research supports pairing skills: a 2025 meta-analysis of 86 studies found that imagery works better when combined with other psychological skills, which is why we pair it with hypnosis and cognitive tools.

Sessions are one-on-one by Zoom, so they fit around training, school and travel. Everything is built around your sport, your division and your competition schedule. Robert offers three program lengths and recommends one after your free phone consultation.

You start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. We talk through what happens when you compete and whether this is a fit. Your sessions are then held one-on-one by Zoom.

Mental coaching complements your coach’s training. It is not technical instruction in wrestling or any combat sport, and it does not include medical advice. Any nutrition guidance is limited to healthy, sustainable changes and never extreme weight cutting, so a weight-class plan stays with your coach, doctor and dietitian. It does not replace medical or mental health care. Progress is individual; results vary.

Questions athletes and parents ask

Wrestling and combat sports mental coaching FAQ

What is mental coaching and hypnosis for wrestlers and fighters?

It is mental performance training that uses hypnosis, a state of focused attention, together with complementary tools such as CBT, NLP techniques, visualization and subconscious pattern work. The aim is to help you stay calm, focused and committed when you compete.

Can it help with pre-match nerves?

Many athletes feel nerves build for hours or days before a match, and that reaction is largely automatic. Mental coaching works on the tension and doubt behind it and builds a pre-match routine you can repeat. No one can promise a specific result.

Why am I sharper in practice than in matches?

In practice the stakes are low, so you perform on trained habit. In a match, an opponent and a result on the line can trigger an automatic stress response that drilling does not change. Mental coaching trains a different response, so the athlete you are in the room is easier to access when it counts.

Can it help me stop holding back or hesitating?

Many athletes hold back on attacks because they are afraid of being countered, taken down or hit. Mental coaching works on the fear and self-doubt behind that hesitation, helping you commit to your game plan. It does not replace proper technique, safety practices or coaching.

How do you help after a setback, a loss or a bad performance?

The work combines CBT techniques to identify and restructure the thoughts that feed frustration with hypnosis and visualization to rehearse a calmer reset. You leave with a short routine you can use during a match and between matches.

Do you work with wrestling, MMA, boxing and jiu-jitsu?

Yes. Robert works with athletes in nearly every sport, including wrestlers and MMA fighters, and the same mental skills apply across combat sports. The plan is shaped around your sport and the moments that trip you up.

Can it help with tournament and bracket pressure?

Yes. Tournaments, seeding and recruiting carry a lot of pressure, and the work focuses on staying composed and performing the way you train. No one can promise a result.

Do you help with weight and nutrition?

Robert can offer practical nutrition guidance focused on healthy, sustainable changes. He does not coach extreme weight cutting, dehydration or crash dieting, and he does not give medical advice. For a weight-class plan, work with your coach, your doctor or a registered dietitian.

How does it work for a youth or high school athlete?

For athletes under 18, a parent or guardian contacts Robert first for the free 20-minute phone consultation to talk about goals, readiness and how sessions would work. Sessions are private, one-on-one by Zoom, and fit around school and training.

How young can an athlete be?

Robert has worked with athletes as young as 6 and finds that engagement with the work becomes more consistent around ages 8 to 10. A parent or guardian can contact him to discuss the child’s readiness, goals and session arrangements.

Do I need to compete at an elite level?

No. Robert works with athletes from recreational to professional level. If your sport matters to you and your mindset is getting in the way, mental coaching can help.

Does this replace my coach or a sports psychologist?

No. Mental coaching complements your coach’s technical and tactical training. It is not instruction in wrestling or fighting skills and does not replace medical or mental health care.

How do online sessions work?

Sessions are mental training, so you do not need a mat or gear. They are held privately, one-on-one by Zoom, from a quiet place where you can sit comfortably and speak without interruption. His practice is based in Trumbull, CT, and most clients work with him remotely.

What happens in the free consultation?

It is a 20-minute phone call about what happens when you compete, what you want to change, and whether this approach fits. There is no obligation. If you decide to work together, sessions are held one-on-one by Zoom.

How many sessions will I need, and how quickly will I see a change?

It depends on your goals, your sport and how much you practice between sessions. Robert offers three program lengths and recommends one after the free consultation. Results and timelines vary, and no one can promise a specific result.
