You have the swing. The question is whether it shows up when it counts: the first tee with people watching, the three-footer to win the match, the back nine of a tournament round. Golf also asks you to stay calm and decisive for hours, and the long gap between shots is where nerves, doubt and overthinking show up. Mental game coaching and hypnosis train the skills that hold up under pressure: staying present over the ball, resetting after a bad shot, and playing the shot in front of you. Robert Barnett, C.Ht., PMP, MBA, is a certified hypnotherapist and mental performance coach with 35+ years of hypnosis experience, and golfers work with him by Zoom from anywhere.

When the mental side matters

Sound familiar?

Golfers of every level, most of them low handicappers, who:

01 /

First-tee tension

Tighten up on the first tee or in competition, and the swing you own on the range disappears.

02 /

The yips

Fight the yips on short putts or chips, and every stroke feels like a negotiation with your hands.

03 /

Range game, different card

Play well in practice but a different game when the card is real.

04 /

One shot, three holes

Carry one bad shot into the next three holes.

05 /

Back-nine fade

Lose focus on the back nine.

06 /

A routine that holds

Want a pre-shot routine that holds up under pressure.

The pattern behind it

Why your range swing disappears on the course

On the range there is no score, no audience and no consequence, so your swing runs on trained habit. On the course, the same swing can feel like a threat, and an automatic stress response takes over: tension, rushed tempo, doubt. Lessons fix mechanics, but they do not change that response, because it runs below conscious thought. That gap is what mental game coaching works on.

In Robert's experience, the golfers who struggle most with this are often the ones with the best swings on the range. Their game is fine. The pattern that shows up under pressure is what needs to change.

The mental game plan

The solution: a mental game plan built around your golf

The work usually follows three steps, shaped around your game:

HypnosisCBT techniquesNLP methodsVisualizationSubconscious pattern work
01

Map your pressure moments

We pin down exactly when and where your game changes: the first tee, short putts, tournament days, the hole after a mistake.

02

Rehearse a better response

Hypnosis and guided visualization work at the subconscious level, where automatic reactions live, so you can practice the focus and composure you want before you are in the moment.

03

Take a routine to the course

You leave with a pre-shot routine, focus cues and a reset you can use after a bad shot.

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, and it is one tool among several. Most pressure reactions, such as tightening up over a short putt, are automatic habits that run below conscious thought, which is why willpower and positive thinking rarely fix them. We combine hypnosis with complementary methods: cognitive behavioral techniques (CBT) to identify and restructure the thoughts that feed doubt, NLP methods to change how you picture and respond to pressure situations, and subconscious pattern work to replace old reactions with new ones. Because these methods work below the level of conscious effort, they can help shift long-standing habits, and the neural pathways behind them, faster than trying to force a change. In Robert's experience, combining them gets results more quickly than any one alone. It is not mind control, and you stay in charge throughout.

Visualization is a core skill we teach, and we use it inside hypnosis. Research supports pairing skills: a 2025 meta-analysis of 86 studies found that imagery works better when combined with other psychological skills, which is why we pair it with hypnosis and cognitive tools.

Sessions are one-on-one by Zoom, so you can work from anywhere you play. Everything is built around your game, your schedule and the situations that trip you up. Robert offers three program lengths and recommends one after your free phone consultation. In Robert's experience, the shortest is a starting point, since skills that hold up in competition usually take longer to build.

You start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. We talk through what happens on the course and whether this is a fit. Your sessions are then held one-on-one by Zoom.

Mental coaching complements your lessons and practice. Progress is individual; results vary.

What golfers say

High Performance Hypnotherapy has 65+ five-star reviews on Google. The review below is quoted as posted by the client.

“I was in, what seemed to be an inextricable downward spiral with golf for the last two and a half years. My handicap went from 10 to 16, and lesson after lesson could not help relieve the gripping fear that I experienced on the golf course. Meanwhile, my "range game" and studio golf game were at their best. It was clear that the problem was in my mind, and that I had built up a massive aversion to playing on the course itself. I found a therapist in the UK, and spent 5 sessions, that didn't get me anywhere. I found Robert, and within the first session, saw what a gifted therapist could do. The short story is that he helped me enormously! Over the course of the summer, while we were working together, I entered 4 tournaments. I and my partners won 3 of the flights, and I played better than I had played in more than 3 years.”

Tightening up in competition

A club golfer who struggled to stay composed under pressure worked on a pre-shot routine, a calm-and-confident reset cue and hypnosis recordings between sessions. At a recent three-day tournament, the golfer reported a significant improvement in composure and placed second in the flight.

Energized and back in the game

A competitive amateur finishing a multi-session program wrote afterward that the work had been educational and energizing, had brought new life to their golf, and that they planned to keep practicing the skills through the off-season.

More consistent ball-striking

A competitive golfer who struggled to recover after a few poor shots in a row worked on a short pre-shot routine and a personal anchor of three cue words tied to vivid memories. The golfer reported a significant improvement in tee-shot consistency and ball-striking, and a better ability to reset after a bad shot.

Questions golfers ask

Golf mental game FAQ

What is hypnosis for golf?

It is mental game training that uses hypnosis, a state of focused attention, together with complementary tools such as CBT, NLP techniques and subconscious pattern work. The aim is to help you stay calm, present and decisive over the ball.

What methods do you use besides hypnosis?

Robert combines hypnosis with cognitive behavioral techniques (CBT), NLP methods and subconscious pattern work, plus visualization and a pre-shot routine built around your game. The goal is to change the automatic reactions that show up under pressure, not just to manage them with willpower. These tools work at a different level than conscious effort, and in Robert's experience that is why combining them can shift long-standing patterns relatively quickly. No one can promise a specific result.

Can hypnosis help with the yips?

The yips often involve both tension in the body and anxiety about the shot. Mental training can help you manage the nerves and doubt around it, but no one can promise a specific result. If you suspect a physical or neurological cause, check with your doctor or a golf professional too.

Do sessions happen in person?

Sessions are one-on-one by Zoom, so you can work with Robert from anywhere. His practice is based in Trumbull, CT, and most clients work with him remotely.

What happens in the free consultation?

It is a 20-minute phone call about what happens on the course, what you want to change, and whether this approach fits you. There is no obligation. If you decide to work together, sessions are held one-on-one by Zoom.

Will I be in control during hypnosis?

Yes. You stay aware and in control the whole time. Hypnosis is a focused, relaxed state, not mind control, and you can stop at any point.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your goals, your game and how much you practice between sessions. After the consultation you will get a clear plan for what to expect. Robert offers three program lengths. In his experience the shortest is a starting point, and he recommends the one that fits your goals after the free consultation.

How do I choose a hypnotherapist or mental game coach for golf?

Look for a certified hypnotherapist with long experience, a focus on performance rather than general wellness, reviews from real clients that describe specific results in their own words, and a clear way to start, such as a free consultation. Robert Barnett is a C.Ht. with 35+ years of hypnosis experience, works with golfers, executives and competitive athletes, and has 65+ five-star reviews on Google.
