Swimming is a sport of seconds trained for over thousands of hours. When it counts, there is no time-out, no teammate to hide behind and the clock is the only judge. Water polo adds contact, a shot clock and the lone pressure of the shooter and the goalkeeper. Mental coaching and hypnosis train the skills that hold up under that pressure: staying present behind the blocks, resetting after a bad swim or a turnover, and trusting your preparation. Robert Barnett, C.Ht., PMP, MBA, is a certified hypnotherapist and mental performance coach with 35+ years of hypnosis experience. He competed in both sports himself, as a highly competitive USA Swimming age-group swimmer, four-year varsity water polo player (captain his senior year) and swimmer at Choate Rosemary Hall, and varsity swimmer in college. He also started distance ocean swims at age 6 and has competed in open-water swim biathlons. He works with swimmers and water polo players, along with athletes in nearly every sport, by Zoom from anywhere.

When the mental side matters

Sound familiar?

Swimmers and water polo players who:

01 /

Fast in practice, slower at meets

Hit your times in training, then tighten up, go out too hard or fade when the meet, the finals heat or the clock is real.

02 /

Meet-day nerves

Nerves build in the ready room or behind the blocks, with a racing heart, a flat warm-up or a head full of doubt before the start.

03 /

Racing the clock instead of your race

Fixate on times, rankings or a rival and lose your pacing and focus in the middle of the race.

04 /

Replaying a bad swim

Carry a missed cut, a disqualification or a disappointing swim into the next event instead of resetting.

05 /

Shots, penalties and sprints in water polo

Tighten up on a shot, a penalty or a sprint ball, or lose composure after a turnover or an exclusion.

06 /

Pressure to move up

Feel the weight of championships, qualifying cuts, recruiting and the expectations of coaches, teammates and family.

The pattern behind it

Why training times don’t always show up at meets

In training, the stakes are low, so you swim on trained habit. At a meet, with a crowd, a clock and a result on the line, the same race can feel like a threat, and an automatic stress response takes over: tension, a rushed stroke, doubt. Yardage, conditioning and technique improve your swimming, but they do not change that response, because it runs below conscious thought. That gap is what mental coaching works on.

In Robert’s experience, many athletes focus on the result, such as the time, the place or the rival in the next lane, and performance tends to improve when attention shifts to the process: what you can control, one stroke at a time. Robert competed in both sports himself and knows how that moment behind the blocks feels.

The mental game plan

The solution: a mental plan built around your events

The work usually follows three steps, shaped around your events or position, your season and your goals:

HypnosisCBT techniquesNLP methodsVisualizationSubconscious pattern work
01

Map your pressure moments

We pin down when and where your performance changes: the ready room, the start, the last lap, a final, a power play or a penalty shot.

02

Rehearse a better response

Hypnosis and guided visualization work at the subconscious level, where automatic reactions live, so you can rehearse the focus and composure you want before you are in the moment.

03

Take a routine to the pool deck

You leave with a pre-race routine, a focus cue and a short reset you can use between events or after a mistake or a turnover.

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, and it is one tool among several. Most pressure reactions, such as freezing, rushing or overthinking, are automatic habits that run below conscious thought, which is why willpower and positive thinking rarely fix them. We combine hypnosis with complementary methods: cognitive behavioral techniques (CBT) to identify and restructure the thoughts that feed doubt, NLP methods to change how you picture and respond to pressure situations, and subconscious pattern work to replace old reactions with new ones. In Robert’s experience, combining them gets results more quickly than any one alone. It is not mind control, and you stay in charge throughout.

Visualization is a core skill we teach, and we use it inside hypnosis. Research supports pairing skills: a 2025 meta-analysis of 86 studies found that imagery works better when combined with other psychological skills, which is why we pair it with hypnosis and cognitive tools.

Sessions are one-on-one by Zoom, so they fit around training, school and travel. Everything is built around your events or position and the situations that trip you up. Robert offers three program lengths and recommends one after your free phone consultation.

You start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. We talk through what happens when you compete and whether this is a fit. Your sessions are then held one-on-one by Zoom.

Mental coaching complements your coach’s training. It is not technical instruction in swimming or water polo, and it does not replace medical or mental health care. Sessions are done at rest on dry land, never in or near the water. Progress is individual; results vary.

Questions athletes and parents ask

Swimming and water polo mental coaching FAQ

What is mental coaching and hypnosis for swimmers and water polo players?

It is mental performance training that uses hypnosis, a state of focused attention, together with complementary tools such as CBT, NLP techniques, visualization and subconscious pattern work. The aim is to help you stay calm, focused and confident when you compete.

Can it help with meet-day nerves?

Many swimmers feel nerves build in the ready room or behind the blocks, and that reaction is largely automatic. Mental coaching works on the tension and doubt behind it and builds a pre-race routine you can repeat. No one can promise a specific result.

Why am I faster in practice than at meets?

In practice the stakes are low, so you swim on trained habit. At a meet, a crowd and a result on the line can trigger an automatic stress response that yardage does not change. Mental coaching trains a different response, so the swimmer you are in practice is easier to access when it counts.

Can it help me stop going out too hard or racing the clock?

Many swimmers fixate on times or a rival and lose their own pacing and focus. Mental coaching helps shift attention from the result to the process, one stroke at a time. Pacing strategy and technique stay with your coach.

How do you help after a bad swim or a missed cut?

The work combines CBT techniques to identify and restructure the thoughts that feed frustration with hypnosis and visualization to rehearse a calmer reset. You leave with a short routine you can use between events and between meets.

Can it help with shooting and penalties in water polo?

Many players tighten up on a shot, a penalty or a sprint ball, or lose composure after a turnover or an exclusion. Mental coaching works on the tension and doubt behind it and builds a reset routine. Technique stays with your coach.

Can it help water polo goalkeepers?

Goalkeepers face a particular kind of pressure: every goal is exposed and one can linger. The same mental skills apply, such as a reset routine, a focus cue and rehearsing composure, shaped around your position.

Do you work with college and recruited athletes?

Yes. Robert works with college and high school athletes, including those dealing with the pressure of championships, qualifying cuts and recruiting. No one can promise a result.

Do you work with masters and adult swimmers?

Yes. Robert works with athletes from recreational to professional level, including adults who race in masters meets and open water events.

How does it work for a youth or high school athlete?

For athletes under 18, a parent or guardian contacts Robert first for the free 20-minute phone consultation to talk about goals, readiness and how sessions would work. Sessions are private, one-on-one by Zoom, and fit around school and training.

How young can a swimmer be?

Robert has worked with athletes as young as 6 and finds that engagement with the work becomes more consistent around ages 8 to 10. A parent or guardian can contact him to discuss the child’s readiness, goals and session arrangements.

Does this replace my coach or a sports psychologist?

No. Mental coaching complements your coach’s technical and tactical training. It is not instruction in swimming or water polo skills and does not replace medical or mental health care.

Are sessions done in the water?

No. Sessions are mental training done at rest on dry land, one-on-one by Zoom, from a quiet place where you can sit comfortably. They are never done in or near the water.

What happens in the free consultation?

It is a 20-minute phone call about what happens when you compete, what you want to change, and whether this approach fits. There is no obligation. If you decide to work together, sessions are held one-on-one by Zoom.

How many sessions will I need, and how quickly will I see a change?

It depends on your goals, your events or position and how much you practice between sessions. Robert offers three program lengths and recommends one after the free consultation. Results and timelines vary, and no one can promise a specific result.
