Baseball and softball are built on failure. Even the best hitters make an out most of the time, pitchers stand alone on the mound, and there is time to think between every pitch, which is where doubt gets in. The players who last are the ones who can let the last pitch, swing or error go and compete in the next one. Mental coaching and hypnosis train the skills that hold up under that pressure: staying present, resetting quickly after a mistake, and trusting your preparation. Robert Barnett, C.Ht., PMP, MBA, is a certified hypnotherapist and mental performance coach with 35+ years of hypnosis experience. He works with baseball and softball players, including many Division I pitchers and college players, along with hitters, fielders and younger players, and with athletes in nearly every sport. Younger players are welcome too. He works with players and their parents by Zoom from anywhere.

When the mental side matters

Sound familiar?

Baseball and softball players who:

01 /

Slumps that snowball

Carry one bad at-bat or strikeout into the next, until the slump feeds itself and doubt is louder than the plan.

02 /

Pitchers who lose command under pressure

Walk a batter or give up a hit and the rhythm unravels: a rushed delivery, overthinking mechanics, lost command.

03 /

Fear of making the error

Play tentatively in the field, dread the ball being hit their way, and carry one miscue into the next inning.

04 /

Bullpen ace, game-day struggle

Look sharp in the bullpen, the cage or practice but tighten up when the lights are on and the game counts.

05 /

Pressure from tryouts and recruiting

Feel the weight of tryouts, showcases, rankings, playing time and the expectations of coaches and family.

06 /

Coming back from a setback

Return from an injury or a rough stretch but hold back, afraid it will happen again.

The pattern behind it

Why practice doesn't always carry into games

In practice, the stakes are low, so you perform on trained habit. In a game, the same pitch or swing can feel like a threat, and an automatic stress response takes over: tension, rushed decisions, doubt. Lessons, reps and strength work improve your skills, but they do not change that response, because it runs below conscious thought. That gap is what mental coaching works on.

In Robert's experience, many players are focused on the result, such as the stat line, the scouts and who is watching, and performance tends to improve when attention shifts to the process: what you can control, one pitch at a time.

The mental game plan

The solution: a mental plan built around your position

The work usually follows three steps, shaped around your position, your season and your goals:

HypnosisCBT techniquesNLP methodsVisualizationSubconscious pattern work
01

Map your pressure moments

We pin down when and where your game changes: runners in scoring position, a full count, the inning after an error, or facing a certain hitter or pitcher.

02

Rehearse a better response

Hypnosis and guided visualization work at the subconscious level, where automatic reactions live, so you can practice the focus and composure you want before you are in the moment.

03

Take a routine into competition

You leave with a pre-pitch or pre-at-bat routine, a focus cue and a short reset you can use after an error, a strikeout or a walk.

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, and it is one tool among several. Most pressure reactions, such as freezing, rushing or overthinking, are automatic habits that run below conscious thought, which is why willpower and positive thinking rarely fix them. We combine hypnosis with complementary methods: cognitive behavioral techniques (CBT) to identify and restructure the thoughts that feed doubt, NLP methods to change how you picture and respond to pressure situations, and subconscious pattern work to replace old reactions with new ones. In Robert's experience, combining them gets results more quickly than any one alone. It is not mind control, and you stay in charge throughout.

Visualization is a core skill we teach, and we use it inside hypnosis. Research supports pairing skills: a 2025 meta-analysis of 86 studies found that imagery works better when combined with other psychological skills, which is why we pair it with hypnosis and cognitive tools.

Sessions are one-on-one by Zoom, so they fit around practice, classes and travel. Everything is built around your position and the situations that trip you up. Robert offers three program lengths and recommends one after your free phone consultation. In Robert's experience, the shortest is a starting point, since skills that hold up in competition usually take longer to build.

You start with a free 20-minute phone consultation. We talk through what happens when you play games and whether this is a fit. Your sessions are then held one-on-one by Zoom.

Mental coaching complements your coach's training. It is not technical instruction in hitting, pitching or fielding, and it does not replace medical or mental health care. Progress is individual; results vary.

Questions players and parents ask

Baseball and softball mental coaching FAQ

What is mental coaching and hypnosis for baseball and softball players?

It is mental performance training that uses hypnosis, a state of focused attention, together with complementary tools such as CBT, NLP techniques, visualization and subconscious pattern work. The aim is to help you stay calm, focused and confident in games.

Can it help with slumps and strikeouts?

Yes, slumps are one of the most common reasons players work with Robert. Mental training can help you stop carrying one bad at-bat into the next and get back to trusting your preparation, though no one can promise a specific result.

Can it help pitchers with command, walks and pressure innings?

Many pitchers rush, overthink mechanics or lose command when pressure builds, and that reaction is largely automatic. Mental coaching works on the tension and doubt behind it. It is not pitching instruction, so mechanics stay with your coach or pitching instructor.

Can it help with the yips or fear of making an error?

Many players develop hesitation or tension when throwing or fielding under pressure, and that reaction is largely automatic. Mental coaching works on the anxiety behind it. If there is any physical issue, such as pain or an injury, follow your doctor's and trainer's guidance.

Why do I play better in practice than in games?

In practice the stakes are low, so you perform on trained habit. In a game, pressure can trigger an automatic stress response that practice does not change. Mental coaching trains a different response, so the player you are in practice is easier to access when the game counts.

How do you help after an error, a strikeout or a bad call?

The work combines CBT techniques to identify and restructure the thoughts that feed frustration with hypnosis and visualization to rehearse a calmer reset. You leave with a short routine you can use between pitches and between innings.

Do you work with softball players as well as baseball players?

Yes. The mental side is much the same: pressure at the plate, in the circle and in the field. Robert works with athletes in nearly every sport, and sessions are built around your position and the situations that trip you up.

How does it work for a youth or high school player?

For players under 18, a parent or guardian contacts Robert first for the free 20-minute phone consultation to talk about goals, readiness and how sessions would work. Sessions are private, one-on-one by Zoom, and fit around school, practice and games.

How young can a player be?

Robert has worked with athletes as young as 6 and finds that engagement with the work becomes more consistent around ages 8 to 10. A parent or guardian can contact him to discuss the child's readiness, goals and session arrangements.

Do you work with college and recruited players?

Yes. Robert has worked with many Division I pitchers and college players, as well as high school athletes, including those dealing with the pressure of tryouts, showcases, recruiting and playing time. See the college and high school athlete page for more.

Do I have to be an elite or travel-ball player?

No. Robert works with athletes from recreational to professional level. If baseball or softball matters to you and your mindset is getting in the way, mental coaching can help.

Can mental coaching help after an injury or a rough stretch?

Many players are physically cleared but still hesitant, or carry a bad stretch into every game. Mental coaching can help with confidence and focus when you return. It does not assess physical readiness or replace medical care, so follow your doctor's and trainer's guidance.

Does this replace my coach, hitting or pitching instructor, or a sports psychologist?

No. Mental coaching complements your coach's technical training. It is not instruction in hitting, pitching or fielding and does not replace medical or mental health care.

How do online sessions work?

Sessions are mental training, so you do not need a field, a bat or a glove. They are held privately, one-on-one by Zoom, from a quiet place where you can sit comfortably and speak without interruption. His practice is based in Trumbull, CT, and most clients work with him remotely.

What happens in the free consultation?

It is a 20-minute phone call about what happens when you play, what you want to change, and whether this approach fits. There is no obligation. If you decide to work together, sessions are held one-on-one by Zoom.

How many sessions will I need, and how quickly will I see a change?

It depends on your goals, your position and how much you practice between sessions. Robert offers three program lengths and recommends one after the free consultation. Results and timelines vary, and no one can promise a specific result.
